About Me
I love food. Love in a borderline sick, obsessive way. Everything about it… not just the eating (which is indeed the main draw card) but the greedy plotting of what I’m going to eat, exploring the provenance of food, cooking, sharing deliciousness with friends… slamming my face into cakes. I think you get the picture.
I also love wine. In any way I can get it… I don’t discriminate. Give me a five euro bottle of Ribera at a local taverna in Sevilla or an aged Grand Cru Riesling living large in Alsace… I have space in my heart for all. So much so, that I started studying the stuff. I wanted to know why some wines compliment certain foods better, maybe understand my individual palate a little more. I longed to visit a restaurant and not automatically linger around the second or third least expensive wine on the list. Or perhaps feel confident to select a bottle at my local liquor store, not solely based on the sepia pic and swirly font on the label.
It was while I took my first anxious steps into the microcosm of oenology, that I soon discovered a gaggle of wine snobs (aka wankers) who delight in making novice wine drinkers like myself, feel not only out of their depth, but somehow not invited to the party. At first I felt intimidated, then slightly indignant, finally arriving at incandescent rage….these guys don’t ‘own’ the right to drink wine…right? Rigghht??!
Which is pretty much why I started this blog.
Firstly it allows me to indulge in a little food porn on a regular basis. Nice. But secondly I hope it acts as an amiable forum for fellow wine lovers. A place at the table for all, shall we say- whether you are learning about wine or maybe after a little extra knowledge- without the snobbery that so often accompanies it. Wine is to be enjoyed and revelled in by anyone and everyone…. Not just a self anointed few.
There’s just so much to eat, drink and be merry about. So without all the bastard airs and graces, let’s get in…
